OPCW Fact Finding Mission: Á€œCompelling ConfirmationÁ€« That Chlorine Gas Used as Weapon in Syria
The fact-finding mission (FFM) appointed by the OPCW Director-General to examine alleged uses of chlorine gas as a weapon in Syria has found information constituting Á€œcompelling confirmationÁ€« that a toxic chemical was used Á€œsystematically and repeatedlyÁ€« as a weapon in villages in northern Syria earlier this year. OPCW Event on Education and Outreach
Dates: 22-23 September 2014
The event will provide a forum for wide-ranging discussion and exchanges of ideas and best practices on ways of raising awareness of disarmament and non-proliferation issues, especially in educational institutions. This will include demonstrations of materials and tools in various media formats. The objective will be to identify new, approaches and synergies arising from discussion between different representative groups to better inform future efforts in this area.

On 11 October 2013, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons. In its press release following the announcement of the award, the Committee stated that Á€œ[b]y means of the present award to the OPCW, the Committee is seeking to contribute to the elimination of chemical weaponsÁ€«.

82.78% of the world's declared stockpile of 72,524 metric tonnes of chemical agent have been destroyed.
5,545 inspections have taken place at 265 chemical weapon-related and 2,024 industrial sites on the territory of 86 States Parties since April 1997.
4,913 industrial facilities are liable to inspection.
