Berlinale Talents

Berlinale Talents is the annual summit and networking platform of the Berlin International Film Festival for 300 emerging film creatives from all over the world.

Summit

The Summit programme of Berlinale Talents offers a range of master classes and interactive panel discussions taking place at the three venues of HAU Hebbel am Ufer Theatre in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

The approximately 35 sessions centered around an annually changing topic, vary in format and set up: In the ‘grand format’ sessions at the main theatre (HAU1), experts of international reputation give insights into their work. During the mid-scale ‘atelier’ sessions in HAU2 and HAU3 experienced filmmakers and audience are invited to enter into a dialogue.

Talents can register for specific summit sessions for free. For general audiences, tickets are available at the festival and HAU box offices.

Grand format sessions The ‘grand format’ sessions of the Summit programme feature high-profile directors, producers, actors, editors, cinematographers, and production designers with an outstanding international reputation, who share their experience in moderated master classes, lectures and panel discussions. They give insight into various working methods and discuss different aspects of filmmaking, ranging from development and pre-production, production and post-production to promotion of films. Many of these sessions relate to brand new or upcoming cinema productions, their content, their format, and the people working on them. ‘Grand format’ sessions are moderated by experienced film critics or film industry professionals and provide a good setting for an intimate talk with inspiring guests.

Atelier sessions The Summit also offers an opportunity for more interactive panel discussions in the ‘‘atelier’‘ sessions. These are mid-scale events for a smaller audience, in which invited experts present practical case studies, enabling Talents to join the discussion and ask more practical questions. Quite often, the ‘atelier’ sessions focus on specific fields of work (like production or editing etc.), even though the sessions are always accessible to Talents from other fields of work. The ‘‘atelier’‘ set-up enables directors to deepen their insight in the details of cinematography, the dynamics of editing, the secrets of casting actors, new possibilities in digital production design for films, the latest developments in online distribution or the dos and don’ts of setting up an international co-production. This format explicitly shows an ever-changing film industry, shares the latest insights and reflects the flexibility demanded from film professionals. The sessions are usually divided into parts: a presentation, often using case studies and film clips, and an interactive part with a Q&A with the experts.

Summit experts Since the first edition in 2003, over 600 experts have participated in the Summit programme, including: Ken Adam, Gael García Bernal, Juliette Binoche, Jane Campion, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Park Chan-wook, Isabel Coixet, Willem Dafoe, Julie Delpy, Thomas Demand, Claire Denis, Alexandre Desplat, Anita Ekberg, Ralph Fiennes, Bence Fliegauf, Stephen Frears, Greta Gerwig, Agnès Godard, Ted Hope, Dennis Hopper, Nina Hoss, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Holly Hunter, Gaston Kaboré, Janusz Kamiński, Shah Rukh Khan, Victor Kossakovsky, Ed Lachman, Mike Leigh, Matthew Libatique, Ken Loach, Andie MacDowell, Lucrecia Martel, Juergen Mayer H., Alex McDowell, Brillante Mendoza, John Cameron Mitchell, Walter Murch, Michael Nyman, Joshua Oppenheimer, José Padilha, Hengameh Panahi, Raoul Peck, Christian Petzold, Charlotte Rampling, Keanu Reeves, Carlos Reygadas, Alex Rodriguez, Isabella Rossellini, Ryūichi Sakamoto, Walter Salles, James Schamus, Volker Schlöndorff, Paul Schrader, Ridley Scott, Ulrich Seidl, Abderrahmane Sissako, Molly Malene Stensgaard, Tilda Swinton, István Szabó, Tom Tykwer, Christine Vachon, Paul Verhoeven, Andrzej Wajda, Wim Wenders, Michael Werner, Wong Kar-wai, Jia Zhang-ke and many more.

It was a great experience to meet participants from all over the world. I still remember this amazing feeling of having hundreds of gigabytes running through my brain, and having the clear vision how I wanted to make my film. Kaspar Goba, Latvia | Berlinale Talents 2007

Talent Project Market

Meet Your Perfect Match

The Talent Project Market, a collaboration between the Berlinale Co-Production Market and Berlinale Talents, offers Talents inside knowledge and contacts that are necessary to bring them closer to making their films.

Ten emerging producers and directors are selected to present their film proposals to experienced co-producers and financiers who are attending the Berlinale Co-Production Market. In addition, the Talent Project Market offers two monetary awards. The Talent Project Market is open to producers and directors participating in Berlinale Talents as well as to previous participants (producer and director alumni).

MORE less

Talent Project Market is one of the Berlinale Talents project labs. At the same time, it is a special section within the Berlinale Co-Production Market, reserved for 10 emerging producers and directors from Berlinale Talents. The Berlinale Co-Production Market is a 2,5-day event during the Berlin International Film Festival which brings together around 500 producers and financiers from all over the world for exclusive and concentrated networking.

You can apply for the Talent Project Market with a feature film project for theatrical release and suitable for an international co-production. The script of your film project must be finished and preferably (although not necessarily) already have a producer and/or initial financing attached. If your project is invited, you will participate in the 3-day programme and have the chance to meet various potential partners for your project.

The first day of Talent Project Market focuses on the preparation of your meetings and learning more about the international film business and its markets. A pitching trainer, various mentors and other industry experts join to help you by giving insider tips on how to present and to market your project, and by sharing their views on the ins and outs of international co-production, financing and co-production markets. The second and third day at Talent Project Market are dedicated to one-on-one meetings with potential partners for your project, who can read about your project in the Berlinale Co-Production Market project catalogue and request 30-minute meetings with you. These requested meetings will be pre-scheduled by us. In addition, Talent Project Market offers a variety of informal networking opportunities and gives you the chance to exchange ideas and share your experiences with the other selected Talents.

As a Talent Project Market participant you are automatically considered for the VFF Talent Highlight Pitch Award, endowed with 10.000 Euro (sponsored by the VFF - Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten). Three of the 10 Talent Projects will be pre-selected by the VFF and an international jury for this public pitching event at the Berlinale Co-Production Market and one of them receives the 10.000 Euro award for further project development. The other two competitors receive 1.000 Euro each.

In addition, another prize is awarded - this one among all projects at the Berlinale Co-Production Market (Talent Projects included), the ARTE International Award endowed with 6.000 Euro. Here, representatives of the broadcaster ARTE chose the winning project during the market.

If you wish to apply for Talent Project Market, you must first apply to Berlinale Talents as a producer or director. After submitting the general application you will have the possibility to apply for Talent Project Market. Former participants of Berlinale Talents are invited to apply directly.

If you need further information, please dont hesitate to get in touch with us at tpm@berlinale.de or +49 30 25920 515.

At the Production Design Studio experts share how the advancement of technological possibilities has allowed them to redefine what is possible when it comes to their work. The Production Design Studio is done in collaboration with the University of Southern California (USC) and the 5D Institute, Los Angeles. Worldbuilding is a metaphor for a design and iteration process that creates and actualizes the story space in digital narrative media. It addresses the experience of creating new worlds for storytelling through an immersive creative practice.

Production Design Studio offers the chance for production designers to take part in a collaborative exploration to develop the practice of visual storytelling, using new inception and development processes to prototype, capture and manufacture the imagination within a single virtual production space. At the core of the studio sessions, production designers have the opportunity to re-examine the creative process itself, to discover and develop new ways of seeing, thinking, iterating and collaborating.
